Indian Capital Technology Center Winner at the Hospitality & Tourism Management Program Student Competition, Sponsored by US Foods and Best Western Hotels of Oklahoma
On March 7 and 8, the Oklahoma Hotel & Lodging Association hosted the 8th Annual Hospitality & Tourism Management Program (HTMP) Student Competition. The event, held in Stillwater at the Hampton Inn & Suites and Meridian Technology Center, was presented in partnership with US Foods and Best Western Hotels of Oklahoma.
The students arrived on the afternoon of Thursday, March 7 ready to compete. They began with the Night Audit and Room Inspection sections of the competition, which gave students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities in Housekeeping and Front Desk operations.
Friday morning, students competed in the Knowledge Bowl at the Hampton Inn.
This portion of the competition required students to think back on their HTMP Year 1 curriculum, as knowledge in many areas of the hotel was required to compete in the question-and-answer style event. Students completed two rounds of questions in which they were asked details about the front desk, banquet and catering, maintenance and housekeeping, and numerous lodging and tourism terms.
Following the Knowledge Bowl, the competition moved to Meridian Technology Center for the Case Study and Hospitality Project.
During the Case Study, students were given a scenario. The team had 15 minutes to prepare answers their answers about the challenges presented to a hotel operation, which they then presented to the judges.
The Hospitality Project competition demonstrated the students' knowledge, skills, and abilities in planning an event, including the invitation, Banquet Event Order (BEO), menu, and floor plan. Students were judged on accuracy, presentation, and organization of ideas. The scenario for this competition was provided to the students two months before the event to allow them some time to prepare.
The scores were tabulated and awards were presented to the winners at the awards luncheon held in the Meridian Technology Center dinning room. Congratulations go to the following teams.

Hospitality is the fastest growing industry in the United States and is facing a shortage of trained managers with lodging experience. Today's hospitality industry is looking for people who enjoy variety, challenge and, above all, people. AH&LAEI's Hospitality & Tourism Management Program (HTMP) provides 11th and 12th grade students with the classroom learning and real-life work experiences needed to take advantage of the boundless opportunities in lodging.
